When you are down and out with a cold, you may think that all you want to do is lay down and rest. You may think that is what you should be doing to recover faster as well. However, this means that you would be giving up on your exercise plans for at least a week or maybe more, until the cold goes away. Your immune system is complicated and just laying down won’t make your cold go away. It might make you feel better but likely not. If you exercise regularly you are likely to build up your immune system so you don’t catch a cold as often. If you already have a cold and your symptoms are just showing up inside your head and not in your chest, you should get up and exercise. With chest symptoms, you should take one or two days off. Also, if you are working out with a cold and you feel too weak, don’t be afraid to take it easy.
Paying Attention to the Symptoms
One of the first things you need to do before you decide if you will exercise when you have a cold is to pay attention to the symptoms you have. If you are moving along with a head cold, that would be alright. When you have watery eyes, nasal congestion or a runny nose, you should still do your exercise plan but maybe not push yourself to the limit you normally would. If you are having an upset stomach, chest congestion, a fever or aches in your body, make sure you take one or two days of rest. If you do exercise when you have symptoms under your head, you will likely be sick for longer and become more dehydrated as well.
Doing Moderate Exercise
If you normally push yourself as hard as you can, don’t do that when you have a head cold. Make sure you just do moderate exercise. Research shows that moderate exercise during a head cold won’t make you be sick for any longer. Again, just as long as you make sure you aren’t working out to the intensity that you are used to, you will be fine. You can and should even take one or two more breaks than you normally do during your work out session at this time as well. If a certain exercise you normally do is just too much when you have a head cold, switch it with another that won’t cause you problems instead.
If you are normally working out in the gym and you have a head cold, it is probably best that you work out at home instead. You need to think about germs and what this would mean for others and their work out plans if you got them sick. If you do still go to the gym bring along sanitizing wipes and clean everything you use when you are done with it.
Another thing that you must keep in mind at any time is that you should not over-train. Even if you don’t have a cold yet, if you over-train regularly you are more likely to get sick. If you have a cold, you certainly shouldn’t be overtraining at all.
Listen to What Your Body Tells You
While it is generally alright to work out when you have a head cold, you should still make sure you listen to what your body tells you. The first couple of days when you have a head cold, you may be very exhausted. Your immune system is working overtime trying to heal you. If you are too exhausted, you shouldn’t be using exercise machinery or working out too much. You might need to sleep extra instead.
